My mother lives in White River Junction, VT , right on the border with NH . I got this email from her this morning:

Vermont and NH are merely a river apart. There is no grocery shopping available to me where I live in Vermont except a small boutique grocery that has steep prices. So I go one mile across the Connecticut River to the supermarkets right there.

This morning, the stores were MOBBED. There must have been a hundred people in BJ’s, all pushing overflowing carts. The lines at the registers were 20 people deep! The store manager was baffled — and so was I! Then my BFF Betsy sent this email. Now I know why.

[My daughter] says that Vermont is now telling people that only work and groceries are considered essential reasons to travel to NH. A woman in Hartford needed to go to NH to buy shoes for her daughter, whose only shoes had come apart. She called the state to check and was told that wasn’t essential and she wasn’t allowed to go.

Come on, people. Don’t fuck this up again.

Sorry, too many acronyms made it confusing.

Is the panic due to COVID or the election?

Hey, a majority of America thinks there will be civil unrest on Wednesday... if you accept that premise, this seems like rational economic behavior.

As somebody pointed out last night, Rodeo Drive and Park Avenue are boarded up in plywood this weekend and into next week. If everybody really thought the challenger was going to bring “Peace and Tranquility” why would they do that?

Texas as a whole is all kinds of fucked up, with positives more than half way back to the worst of the summer. However, the vast majority of that is from El Paso, where they just instituted a two-week lockdown . Houston and Dallas are also getting bad again (I think). Fortunately, Travis County (Austin) is holding steady at levels just above where we were during the spring lockdown. I guess the masks everybody is wearing are working. Whoda thunk?

The latest I have read is that there is now a 37% chance that PA decides the election. There is also potential for Trump to be up by over 20 points on Tuesday, but still lose the state a week later after all of the mail in ballots are counted. The state won’t start counting anything until Tuesday, and several counties won’t count mail ins un til Wednesday. This is coming from 538.

Mail in ballots in PA will be accepted as long as they are received by Friday, and do not need a post mark or matching signature to the voter registration. These two tidbits open up the possibility for fraud bigly. Note that this was put in place by the Ds, then appealed by the Rs all the way up to SCOTUS, who voted 4-4 to allow it.

Best case there is a landslide that is called early on Tuesday and one of the old farts concedes. Worst case the election is decided by PA by a small number of votes a week later, neither old fart concedes, and all manner of shit-fuckery ensues.

Personally I’m not concerned about the virus, nor about rioting by rednecks in the Pennsyltuckey portion of the state. Pittsburgh where I am and Philly may be fuct though. As such, I already have enough food to not leave home for several weeks, enough TP to attend a 10 cent wing night every day from now until March, and worst case will be ready to skip town. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

I would think that it’s got to be more than just bars, but those are places where people congregate in close proximity, drink, get loud, and don’t wear a mask. I haven’t been to a bar in years, let alone during the pandemic.

NYT reported Biden up by 6 points in PA. This was the same paper that was reporting that Hilary would win. Actually, they were running a “percent chance of victory” for Hilary, and it was super high in the weeks before the election, then just kept shrinking until it got to, presumably, zero. I guess we’ll just have to see. Four years ago I took a Xanax and went to bed. Not sure what I’ll do this year.

Atlanta has a very high percentage of mask wearers and Gatech in particular has probably 90% on campus property and nearly 100% inside buildings. The frat houses have probably less than 1% but they’ve all had it at this point. My friend joined a frat and got it within a few days at the beginning of the semester. But my goodness I went to a HS friend’s H alloween party and I and my roommate (same HS) were the only ones wearing a mask! If the suburbs took this seriously at the beginning we’d not still be dealing with this on such a widespread level.

“under any circumstances”? That’s over the top.

Used to be that the former presidents and the losers had the good sense to just be quiet. Nobody’s heard incendiary language from Bush or Romney have they? Meanwhile, on the other side of the ledger...

Man, from the “sore loser” party? Everything from an impeachment-everybody-knew-was-a-fail to a political-hit-job-dossier paid for by the woman pictured above to character assassination of a minivan-driving-mom-of-seven (who apparently is a sleeper agent for the war on women).

We’ll find out Tuesday, but my guess is that the consensus view of the country is being worn- out by violent- over-reaction to every single thing that’s happened in the last four year. Nobody thinks riots will erupt if Biden wins... why is that?

Kinja'd!!! WilliamsSW > DipodomysDeserti

At least one had Trump signs in his yard, and it was the lack of reaction by Trump afterward that was most telling.

And the other link didn’t involve attempting to run  the actual candidate off the road.

Kinja'd!!! nermal > ttyymmnn
11/01/2020 at 12:44

Kinja'd!!!3

The issues specific to PA are that even if Biden wins the state, it won’t be until after all of the mail-ins are counted, which can take up to a week. The in-person vote reported Tuesday is expected to skew bigly to Trump, with the mail-in going to Biden, and the total to be quite close once everything is added up.

Add in how close the election in whole is expected to be, the potential for fraud, and the nature of the two contenders, and things could get quite spicy.

Thus the need to stockpile TP.

Hmm and I wonder why this whole situation in PA is challenging .

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/28/pennsylvania-elections-ballot-extension-supreme-court

The US supreme court has rejected a last-minute plea from Pennsylvania Republicans to overturn a three-day extension of the absentee ballot deadline, a hugely consequential ruling in one of the most closely watched swing states in the presidential election.

The state usually requires ballots to arrive by 8pm on election night in order to count. But last month, the Pennsylvania supreme court extended that deadline by three days for ballots postmarked by election day, a move likely to allow thousands of late-arriving ballots to count.

Pennsylvania Republicans asked the US supreme court to halt that ruling pending appeal, but it declined to do so last week, deadlocking 4-4 and offering no explanation for its decision. The Pennsylvania Republican party then asked the court to expedite the case, which the court again declined to do on Wednesday.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/seven-pennsylvania-counties-will-wait-until-after-election-day-process-n1245614

Seven out of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties will wait to count mail-in ballots until the day after the election, according to local officials, potentially delaying when media organizations will be able to project a winner in the state.

Pennsylvania allows for counties to begin processing mail-in ballots the morning of Election Day, but officials in Beaver, Cumberland, Franklin, Greene, Juniata, Mercer and Montour — all counties which voted for Donald Trump in 2016 — said that concerns over staffing and resources led them to delay when they will count mail ballots.

Agree, though I don’t really know how easy it is to add capacity. In my mind, that means rooms, nurses, doctors and equipment. None of which is an instant fix.  And of course the profit motive makes them reticent to make the investment, which is problematic.

Hospital stays should be shorter this time on average which will help.

Next week is likely to have anything ranging from riots to insurrection, on top of the increasing pandemic activity that is likely to result in draconian lockdowns. It’s also likely that there will be heavy voter intimidation/suppression efforts from thugs of varying and often unclear affiliation next week, which has the potential to make the situation even worse. There is a lot pointing toward further violence.

I think at some point we need to become comfortable living with this, just like we have every other virus that has become endemic. Not living a sedentary life and eating healthy seems to be much more effective at fighting this than wearing a mask or social distancing (the virus seems to come back regardless of what lockdown measures are implemented ) . I don’t consider the people concerned about this to be too far out in the lunatic fringe. The states are free to develop their own rules—but there is national interest in “reducing tension” over ballot validity, not increasing it. Such an open-ended set of operating rules just screams for a challenge...

Sadly that dust-up in Florida in 2000 ends up being an ice cream social compared to this go-round...

I think that's unfortunately true.  We have made progress in treatment though,  and hopefully a vaccine will be here sooner rather than later.

The people that argue the loudest against voter ID are the same ones that threaten  to move to Canada if their guy doesn’t win..... ummm.... wait what are Canada’s voter ID requirements? ummmmm..........

https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=vot&dir=ids&document=index&lang=e

(The actual answer is that it’ s a combo of “racism of low expectations” and “just pick a side, then be a dick about it”).

Those seem like pretty accommodating requirements.

In all the arguments I’ve ever heard about disenfranchisement, I’ve never seen a credible argument that requiring some kind of ID is a hardship. Also, don’t you need to be registered before you can vote anyway?

We went to grocery and Costco today. Normal crowds. Bought TP. There was a limit 1 on Charmin, but no limit on Kirkland.

How difficult would it be for Russia or China to acquire a PA ballot, print up a few thousand copies and mark them for their preferred candidate , then have one of their people in the US deliver them to the appropriate place ? Same for the DNC or RNC. Or a a small coalition of prominent rapers. Voter registrations for PA are available directly from the state for $20. You can literally get a list of every registered voter in the state, along with all of the info you’d need to enter on a fraudu lent ballot and where to deliver it, by filling out an online form and paying $20. We’re not talking eLiTe HaX0R or Mission Impossible shit here .

For all of the talk about the importance of the securing the election , the one in PA is anything but .

Costco bjs or  any supermarket on a weekend sounds like hell

I n my state multiple areas are regressing with restrictions dilute to the larger case counts. It’s given the spike of cases it’s seems pretty likely. I’m trying to stock up on all the random. Condiments etc that I got caught off gauge and didn’t have.

Every argument I’ve seen against voter ID boils down to that it disproportionately affects poor, non-white people, who predominantly vote for the Ds. This is b ecause there is paperwork required to get an ID,   and it costs money and time and takes effort to drive to the DMV.

This argument implies that a ll of those poor, non-white people (and their juicy D votes) are too incompetent and lazy and poor to make sure they have a valid ID, thus will just skip voting altogether if it’s required. It also ignores the fact that most of them probably already have one anyways. Thus, “racism of low expectations”.

I’m a very firm believer that they NEED to reform this, it’s fucking ridiculous. It should ONLY be option number one (photo ID) and also checked to a Social Insurance Number https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html

Reason:

I need TWO government issued photo IDs to do my marine licenses at Transport Canada or else they give me the heave-ho (and I’m not kidding, I’ve watched them kick people to the curb that travelled 5h one way from the interior and forgot them). Also any that Transport Canada has issued me doesn’t count; not my discharge book or the security license or anything.

The feds have sent voter cards to people that aren’t allowed to vote. There’s an older article on the CBC where they sent a US citizen one who has a place in Alta but never registered to vote, isn’t dual citizen or even permanent resident.

People want to make it seem like there’s no issue with mail in voting and fraud . However you have no precedent of something this scale, it’s NOT comparable to Absentee voting of past.

Exactly my thoughts. Those people already have drivers licenses etc. Like everyone else, they make the time for the things that are important to them. So those arguments are ridiculous on their face.

My wife went to Costco on Friday and said the paper products and cleaning items were pretty low on inventory. So I think it’s probably starting again. Once more people get a whiff that it’s happening it’ll be mass panic buying again.

Note that this was put in place by the Ds, then appealed by the Rs all the way up to SCOTUS, who voted 4-4 to allow it.

What?!? What the hell is different from Wisconsin’s case that they ruled 5-3 against allowing votes to be counted that arrived after Nov 3 as long as they were postmarked by Nov 3 at the latest?

Apparently it was because of who made the initial rulings? How does that even matter?

In the Pennsylvania case, Roberts sided with the liberals. He wrote Monday that he voted the other way in the Wisconsin case because the lower court ruling came from a federal judge, not a state court, as it did in the Pennsylvania case.

Nobody thinks riots will erupt if Biden wins... why is that?

I absolutely do think the MAGA cult will riot if Trump loses. They already are doing shit like this

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/01/biden-harris-bus-highway-texas-trump-train

https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/523937-trump-fans-block-traffic-on-new-york-bridge

https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-supporters-spend-weekend-clogging-blue-state-highways

https://www.foxnews.com/us/trump-barrs-lock-up-biden

https://au.news.yahoo.com/aussie-woman-shares-trump-supporters-disturbing-threat-115421919.html

Nothing I’ve seen tells me that the MAGA cult will accept any results they don’t like. We’ve already been hearing for months about all the fraud that’s supposedly going to happen even though voting fraud has been proven to be fairly uncommon time and time again.

I see it as SCOTUS being consistent in both rulings, in that they said “no” to appeals   in each state . The appeals themselves just happened to be on opposite sides of the issue. It wasn’t a ruling for or against counting ballots as much as it was two consistent rulings against changing the way ballots were counted so close to the election date .

That makes more sense than what is attributed to Robert’s change of opinion in the article I was reading. Funny how the court is only consistent due to a singular person on the court. The seven other justices changed stances in each case as to whether the appeal was allowed or not.

Yeah PA has the potential to be very close and to be a mess...which could lead to all kinds of social unrest, especially given how one particular old man is likely to behave.

I’m just hoping for a quick and clear result in someplace like FL that just closes the door and we can all just move on from there.

From the other side of the aisle I agree with you on the principle, pretty basic requirement anywhere else in the world.

But then we also have the situation of certain groups trying to push for specific types of ID, making those harder for certain demographics to obtain (I’m sure you’ve visited an urban DMV) , etc etc. If there’s a large national push to get everyone in the country a voter ID card (and while we’re at it, to make it equally convenient for all to vote based on availability of polling centers, etc.) I think you, I, and many others would be all for it.

Yet here we are with two groups of idiots refusing to yield an inch to the other, because the other idiot is equally ridiculous about the other side of the coin.

Oh come on, man.

On one side we have a private citizen suggesting that one of the candidates not concede under any condition...until the results are abundantly clear - whether it be by the end of a legal process, the EC votes being cast, or hopefully very very clear results in certain states that close out the competition. What’s unfair about this?

On the other hand you have the current sitting president not willing to say whether he’s on board with a peaceful transition of power IF HE LOSES.

You’re focusing your energy on the wrong place, simply based on your political preferences.

I did a little searching, but I didn’t get a definitive answer.  Don’t you have to be registered to vote? And don’t you have to give some kind of positive ID to register?
